I have been a practicing psychotherapist, in clinical and private practice, since 1978. That is 48 years, and I am still doing it, because I have never found anything I would rather do.
I completed my post-graduate studies in 1978 and spent a year as a resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by many years of clinical work in hospitals and clinics. Along the way I trained in the therapeutic uses of altered states of consciousness, meditation, mind-body connections, hypnotherapy, self-awareness, sleep studies, the psychological aspects of cancer therapy, trauma therapy, stress reduction, and clinical depression and anxiety.
I have also worked as a teacher, an advisor, a coach, a researcher, and an author. The thread running through all of it has been the same: helping people find their way out of suffering and into a life that is fulfilling and joyous.
Why a site for seniors
Most of what is written about mindfulness is written for people in the middle of their working lives. I am in my senior years and know the issues that we seniors face every day of our lives. I have practiced mindfulness and meditation myself all my adult life. I have also been teaching mindfulness, meditation, and stress reduction to my patients and clients in my psychotherapy practice for the pat 48 years. I have witnessed first hand the benefits that mindfulness practices provide consistently.
The people I have worked with in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond have questions that arise with age. What do I do about the nights when my mind will not let go? How do I live with a pain that is a result of an aging body? How do I stay emotionally steady when so much is changing around me, and how do I prevent the accidents that can debilitate me.
Mindfulness has a great deal to offer in answer to these questions.
That is what this site is about. All the mindfulness practices presented here in can be done in any position, in any place, at any time, during any activity, and are short and simple.
How I work with people
I see clients privately and securely by video conferencing, telehealth, wherever they are and wherever I am, and I have been working this way for twenty-five years, since video conferencing first became practical. Sessions are held over Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp. Some people come to learn meditation properly. Others come because something has become too difficult to deal with alone.
I also teach groups — senior centers, retirement communities, libraries, seminars, retreats, cruises, church groups, and the staff who care for older people — as a single talk or a course over several weeks.
You can read how sessions work and what they cost on my main site: Sessions with Jon Shore.
Writing and recordings
I have written a good deal over the years. The first edition of my book Freedom From Suffering: A Spiritual Approach can be read in full, at no cost, on my main site. There are also guided meditations, articles, practices, and videos there, and my books and recordings are published through Light Unlimited Publishing.
On this site you will find written meditations, everyday exercises, videos, and three guided audio recordings.
I am based in Italy and Latvia but am available via video conferencing anywhere in the world.
Ask me something
I answer every message myself, and I read them all. If you have a question about anything here, or about whether this would suit you, write to me.
